Dionysiaque stepped onto the underground scene in 2024 through I, Voidhanger Records with their first album "Diogonos", primarily concerning the mythological figure of Dionysus. Two years later, the French group returns with their second full-length, "La Tourbe Des Rêves". These guys play a sick style of doom metal infected with black and thrash metal elements. They keep things entirely live in the studio, tracking everything during a single week in August 2025 at Heldscalla Studio. The current lineup features guitars, bass, drums, and agitated vocals tearing through the speakers.

The audio quality throws an unedited and raw reality right in your face. The guitars execute massive, droning riffs over thumping drum patterns. Dionysiaque strips away modern studio trickery, resulting in an organic documentation of their playing. The vocals cut through the instrumentation with angry mumblings and shouts. The rhythm section maintains a slow, trudging pace for the majority of the runtime, occasionally speeding up with those thrash metal influences. It is a totally ripping execution of doom metal, providing a genuinely heavy trip for anyone listening.

The lyrics tackle historical events and strong anti-fascist ideas. "Aaron" details the story of an American marine who immolated himself outside an Israeli embassy to protest the ongoing events in Palestine. "Hate Fruit" discusses how villagers in Italy retaliated against fascist abusers in the 1940s. The song "La Vierge Noire" addresses the actions of Germaine Berton, an early twentieth-century anarchist who killed a far-right representative to avenge French President Jean Jaurès. Furthermore, "La Commune Ou La Mort" focuses on the 1871 Paris uprising against the bourgeoisie and their Prussian allies.

Other tracks look at the concept of death from strange and historical angles. "Accabadora" talks about elderly women in Sardinia who practiced ritual euthanasia to end the suffering of dying individuals. "The Two Headed Boy" tells the tale of seventeenth-century Siamese twins put on trial for murder. These subjects mix social issues with metaphysical questions. The band approaches these morbid topics similar to early Delta Blues musicians, pouring out negative energy to cleanse the mind of black bile.

"La Tourbe Des Rêves" succeeds by maintaining a constant state of despair and anger. The musicians turn absolute bleakness into an interesting musical journey, offering a tiny ray of hope at the end of the tunnel. The playing remains thoroughly steadfast throughout the entire runtime, capturing an uncompromised version of the genre. The live studio method preserves the genuine anger of the performance. This album delivers a proper doom metal beating, throwing down heavy riffs and pissed-off lyrics.

Score: 7.5
