Mayhem originated forty years ago in Langhus, Norway, forging the absolute framework for extreme music in Scandinavia. Through decades of madness, death, and legendary releases, they remain a supreme force of darkness. Now, they drop their seventh studio album, "Liturgy Of Death", via Century Media Records. This entity features Attila Csihar dominating the microphone, Jan Axel Blomberg destroying the drum kit, Jørn Stubberud holding down the bass, alongside Morten Bergeton Iversen and Charles Hedger shredding the guitars. They operate as a strictly unified death machine here.

"Liturgy Of Death" operates as an absolute assault on the senses. The songs are long, stretching past the five-minute mark, presenting a massive wall of sound. The band delivers high-speed tremolo picking and blast beats that rip straight through the speakers. There is supreme darkness radiating from the riffs. The guitars intertwine to generate an incredibly sinister atmosphere, dragging the listener down into pure misery. It strikes viciously.

Attila delivers a masterclass in vocal extremity. His voice shifts between horrifying shrieks and deep, dramatic chanting. The lyrics dive entirely into death, existence, and absolute ruin. Behind him, Hellhammer completely annihilates the drum kit with insane precision and speed. Necrobutcher provides a heavy, clanking bass presence that anchors the entire sonic storm. The execution from every musician is strictly lethal, operating at maximum velocity. Garm even shows up on "Ephemeral Eternity" to add another layer of grim vocal dominance.

Tracks like "Despair" and "Funeral Of Existence" unleash total devastation with extremely fast tempos. "Propitious Death" and "The Sentence Of Absolution" slow down slightly to deliver crushing, doom-laden riffs intertwined with eerie melodies. The guitars written by Iversen and Hedger complement each other perfectly, creating a relentless meditation on absolute death. Even the bonus tracks "Life Is A Corpse You Drag" and "Sancta Mendacia" deliver massive amounts of aggression.

This release proves Mayhem is completely untouchable today. "Liturgy Of Death" reigns supreme as a furious, sinister monster of an album. The production by Tore Stjerna is massive and freezing cold. After forty years of existence, the true masters of Norwegian extreme music offer another essential, brutal listen for any maniac looking for pure musical destruction.
