Immolation forged their name deep within the death metal underground back in 1991 with their debut, "Dawn Of Possession". Decades down the line, the New York quartet remains a towering pillar of extreme music. Ross Dolan, Robert Vigna, Alex Bouks, and Steve Shalaty have spent over thirty years honing a completely distinct and suffocating sound. Albums like "Close To A World Below" and "Kingdom Of Conspiracy" cemented their status as absolute masters of the craft. Now, arriving at their twelfth studio album under Nuclear Blast, the veterans show zero signs of slowing their relentless assault.

"Descent" provides a masterclass in sinister, unrelenting death metal. The music reaches an incredibly high level of sonic extremity. Vigna and Bouks unleash a relentless torrent of dissonant, twisting riffs that warp the mind. Dolan roars over the madness with a monstrous, cavernous growl, executing every lyric with pure, earth-shaking power. Shalaty relentlessly batters the drum kit, dropping blast beats and groove-laden fills with terrifying precision. Tracks like "Adversary" and "Bend Towards The Dark" explode through the speakers, bringing total devastation.

The sonic presentation on "Descent" achieves absolute perfection. The band collaborated across multiple locations, tracking guitars, bass, and vocals with Justin Passamonte at Jpass Music, and capturing the drums with Noah Buchanan at Mercinary Studios. Longtime engineer Zack Ohren handled the mixing and mastering duties, forging a muscular and high-fidelity final product. Every instrument strikes with maximum impact. The snare cracks like thunder, the double-bass rumbles through the floorboards, and the distorted guitars slice through the mix flawlessly.

Beyond the crushing audio, the visual presentation amplifies the darkness of "Descent". Renowned artist Eliran Kantor paints another haunting masterpiece for the cover art, perfectly capturing the apocalyptic visions of the music. Inside the physical copies, Santiago Jaramillo of Triple Seis Design provides incredible booklet illustrations. The entire package radiates pure death metal authenticity. The grim, sorrowful aesthetics match the menacing, twisted guitar leads and the lyrical focus on a decaying world. The visual synergy with the auditory destruction is complete.

Immolation creates a truly monumental release with "Descent". The legendary death metal squad continues to operate at the absolute peak of extreme music. From the opening devastation of "These Vengeful Winds" to the final ringing chords of the title track, the album crushes everything in its path. Thirty-five years into their career, the New York quartet executes another supreme auditory massacre. This ten-track offering demands massive respect and maximum volume.
