Threat Signal burst out of Canada back in 2006 with "Under Reprisal" and spent the next decade making waves alongside heavy hitters like Soilwork, Motorhead, and Arch Enemy. Following a long nine-year silence since "Disconnect", the quintet returns with their fifth full-length album, "Revelations". Jon Howard on vocals, Pat Kavanagh on bass, and Travis Montgomery on guitar welcome back drummer Joey Muha and bring in new guitarist Oswin Wong. They built a massive reputation touring the globe and charting on Billboard, bringing technical playing mixed with big melodic hooks. Now, after almost a decade away, they drop "Revelations" through Agonia Records to prove they still have plenty of fire left in the tank.
Jon Howard took control of the mixing, recording, and engineering at his own Woodward Avenue Studio, turning "Revelations" into an absolute audio weapon. Throwing Grammy-winning engineer Tod Jensen into the mix for mastering at Sterling Sound means the final output sounds ridiculously huge. The bass rumbles your skull, the drums smash through the speakers, and the guitars slice right into your brain. Legendary artist Travis Smith handled the cover art, delivering a killer visual representation of the audio violence waiting inside.
Threat Signal relies heavily on their signature cocktail of technical thrash, melodic death metal, groove, and metalcore. The guitar tandem of Travis Montgomery and Oswin Wong fires off relentless riffs and blazing solos that shred through the speakers. Jon Howard constantly shifts between vicious growls and massive melodic singing, providing a dynamic vocal assault across the entire runtime. Joey Muha destroys his drum kit with rapid double bass and aggressive fills, giving the rhythm section a lethal edge alongside Pat Kavanagh and his heavy basslines.
The themes driving "Revelations" deal with personal struggles, internal demons, and fighting through the absolute worst life throws at you. The lyrics dig into dark places and hit back with sheer aggression. The songwriting stays totally focused on speed and heavy grooves. Some tracks definitely blend into one another during the second half, causing a slight dip in momentum. Even so, the sheer velocity and anger keep the listener hooked right until the final note.
"Revelations" marks a strong return for a band that stayed off the radar for almost a decade. Anyone craving heavy, melodic, and technical metal needs to blast this album at maximum volume. The slight similarities in the tracklist barely slow down the massive attack Threat Signal brings to the table. They came back swinging, dropping a huge dose of thrash and groove that definitely wrecks necks. It is a worthy addition to their catalog and a great excuse to bang your head.
