In Malice's Wake have been ripping stages apart for over two decades. These Australian veterans have shared the stage with extreme music legends like Possessed, Destruction, and Bloodbath. They play an infernal crossing of death metal and blackened thrash metal designed for total sonic annihilation. Their fifth studio album, "The Profound Darkness", continues their descent into brutal, horrifying territory. It delivers nine terrifying stories focused entirely on the grim reality of the grave.
The guitars deliver an absolute shredding assault of tremolo picking and evil, palm-muted riffs. Every single riff is built around a ferocious, driving core to cause massive damage in the pit. The production, handled by Chris Themelco and Plec Johansson, gives the entire mix a massive, crushing sound. The drums blast and hammer away, pushing the morbid momentum forward without mercy. The thumping bass lines pummel your skull into dust alongside the furious percussion.
Shaun Farrugia’s vocal delivery is absolutely savage. His aggressive, raspy growls sound like a demon summoned straight from the abyss. He spits out tales of malevolent entities and the terrifying unknown waiting beyond death. Songs like "By Tongues Of Demons" and "The Great Purifier" are prime examples of the malicious energy running through the veins of this album. The morbid atmosphere is constantly maintained to create an immersive, terrifying experience for any diehard metalhead.
The riffing attacks never let up. The hooks stick in your brain, and the furious pacing keeps you headbanging until your neck snaps. It is a fantastic collection of fast, aggressive metal. The transition between the blistering fast sections and the heavier, mid-paced grooves works flawlessly. In Malice's Wake delivers an infectious groove, refusing to slow down or compromise. The execution is top-notch, showing why they have survived in the underground for twenty-five years.
"The Profound Darkness" is an incredibly strong, devastating release. It delivers high-speed aggression, sinister melodies, and absolute musical annihilation. For fans of black, death, and thrash metal colliding in the most brutal way possible, this album is completely essential. These veterans have crafted a sinister masterwork demanding to be played at maximum volume.
