Protrusion is a death metal band from Lafayette, Indiana consisting of former and current members of underground acts such as Gorgasm, Sarcophagy, Human Filleted and Found Hanging. Inspired by classic Morrisound death metal recordings and other underground favorites of the early 90s, Protrusion have harvested a sound both new and familiar to fans of the more archaic and cryptic characteristics of early death metal. In March 2023, Protrusion released a three track self-titled demo that was met with positive reception. They then went on to unleash carnage upon the attendees of many shows and festivals, including those such as the final Chicago Domination Fest in 2023 and Slam Dakota Death Fest in 2025. On January 20th, 2026 Protrusion announced the release details for their upcoming debut album titled: "The Last Suppuration", and is set to be released on March 13th, 2026.

If you live for the stench of the old school, Protrusion is probably already on your radar. These veterans have been rotting in the scene for years, and "The Last Suppuration" is the result of that long-term decay. It’s a gross, mid-tempo march through a graveyard that smells like 1991. The production is filthy, exactly how an Extremely Rotten Production release should sound. It’s got that Indiana stank all over it, reminding everyone that these musicians have been around the block in bands like Gorgasm and Sarcophagy.

The riffs on this album are thick and suffocating. Tracks like "Confined To Anguish" and "Morbid Mortality" bring that heavy, rhythmic thud that makes you want to smash your head against a wall. There is no melody here to save you, just raw, guttural filth. "Exhumer's Romance" and "Accursed Skin" keep the pace steady, focusing on a relentless, bludgeoning energy. It’s the kind of music that works best in a cramped, sweaty basement where the walls are dripping with condensation and the air is thick with the smell of cheap beer and stale smoke.

When "Boiled At Birth" kicks in, the intensity stays high. The vocals are deep, disgusting, and sound like someone choking on their own bile. The drumming is relentless, keeping the tempo locked into a heavy groove that never lets up. "Slugs Of Decadence" and "Scorned Vengeance" follow the same path, delivering more of that classic, Florida-inspired death metal crunch. It’s clear these musicians have a deep respect for the ancient ways, and they aren't interested in adding any modern fluff to their sound.

The back half of the album features longer tracks like "The Last Suppuration" and "Anthropophilic Anomaly". These songs drag you further into the pit, emphasizing a slow, crushing heaviness. The guitar tone is massive, and the bass rumbles underneath like a tectonic plate shifting. There are no fancy solos or useless technical displays. It’s just pure, unfiltered aggression. The music is simple, effective, and focuses entirely on maintaining a dark, oppressive atmosphere that remains consistent across the entire running time.

While the album is a decent debut, it does get a bit monotonous toward the end. The songs start to bleed into one another because the tempo and structure stay so similar throughout. It’s a great trip for fans of the early 90s sound, but a little more variety in the songwriting would have helped it stay fresh. Still, for a first full-length, it’s a nasty, vile offering that proves Protrusion knows how to handle their business in the underground. It’s a putrid, heavy album that does its job without any unnecessary bullshit.

Score: 7.0
