Hailing from the rust belt of Milwaukee, Pig’s Blood has been dragging their boots through the underground for over a decade, refusing to play by anyone’s rules. These maniacs have been brewing a cocktail of total warfare and old-school American death metal since day one. After making a name for themselves with a relentless schedule of sonic battery, they finally landed on Dark Descent Records to drop their latest offensive.
"Destroying The Spirit" is a total war zone. It takes that militant, caveman energy of Revenge and welds it to the structural integrity of early Deicide. The riffs on this thing are like being trapped in a volcanic eruption, just pure molten heat and sulfur. It is a deliberate hybrid that avoids the usual pitfalls of being too messy to follow. They keep the speed high and the aggression even higher, making sure every note serves the purpose of total annihilation.
The guitars on "Standing In Depravity" and "Satanic Hammer Of Justice" provide a serrated edge that rips right through the speakers. There is no mercy found in the percussion either; it is a constant bombardment that sounds like a localized artillery strike. The vocal delivery is a constant stream of abyssal hatred that fits perfectly with the militant theme. It is the kind of sound that makes you want to smash windows and start a riot in a graveyard.
This isn't some over-produced garbage meant for the radio. The production is raw enough to keep the underground fanatics happy while being clear enough to hear the actual riffs. Tracks like "Tartarean Infection" and "Ravenous Hellslaught" show a band that has mastered the art of the bludgeoning battle hymn. They take the suffocating atmosphere of Incantation and speed it up until it becomes a weapon of mass destruction.
If you want something pretty or melodic, listen to something else. "Destroying The Spirit" is for the freaks that live for the scent of leather and sulfur. Pig’s Blood has managed to create a record that is a violent assault on the senses. It is a sharp, jagged piece of metal that shows these Milwaukee veterans are still at the top of their game and ready to burn everything down.
