Born from the swampy underground of New York and New Jersey, Reeking Aura emerged in 2019 as a supergroup of sorts, pulling veterans from heavyweights like Afterbirth, Grey Skies Fallen, and Artificial Brain. After stomping through the scene with a couple of EPs and their debut full-length, they’ve spent their time sharing stages with legends and refining a sound that is as suffocating as it is technically proficient. Now, they return with their second long-player, bringing a revamped lineup that injects fresh blood into their signature brand of atmospheric devastation.

"On The Promise Of The Moon" is a disgusting display of East Coast brutality that manages to be weird without losing its edge. The guitar work from Terrell Grannum and Rick Habeeb is a highlight, churning out riffs that are hooky in a sick way while throwing in strange tones that keep you off-balance. It’s got that classic New York stomp, but it’s twisted into something far more ominous. The addition of Hudson Barth and TJ Coon on the rhythm section makes the whole thing move like a tidal wave of filth, providing a foundation that allows the more melodic, haunting elements to actually land.

William Smith is a beast behind the mic, utilizing those deep, guttural tones that fans of his other projects will recognize immediately. The guest spots from Eston Browne and Jon Berg add some extra layers to the vocal carnage, but the real surprise is how the string arrangements by Ben Karas weave through the tracks. It’s not some symphonic gimmick; it’s a cold, calculated addition that makes the atmosphere feel genuinely threatening. The production by Keith Moore and the mix by Dan Swanö ensure that every note has its own space to rot, making the melodies pop against the crushing weight of the drums.

Tracks like "Concrete Basin Bath" and "Gorged Beyond Grudges" show a band that has mastered the art of being heavy and interesting at the same time. There is a lot of movement in the songwriting, shifting from mid-tempo grooves to bursts of speed that will satisfy anyone who lives for the pit. The title track, "On The Promise Of The Moon", serves as a perfect closer, wrapping the whole experience in a shroud of cosmic misery. It’s clear these guys aren’t just coasting on their resumes; they’re actually pushing each other to create something that stays in your head long after the music stops.

This record is a mandatory listen for anyone who worships at the altar of Gorguts or Immolation but wants a little more lunar-obsessed atmosphere in their diet. It’s a step up in every direction, from the songwriting to the visual aesthetic provided by Ion Carchelan’s art. Reeking Aura has managed to capture the sound of a world decaying under a cold moon, and it’s a trip worth taking. If you want death metal that has a brain as well as a bludgeon, this is the one.
