Horizon Of Aeon is a fresh name, but the crew behind it consists of seasoned Finnish veterans who have spent years dragging their gear through the trenches of the underground. Featuring former members of acts like Fall Of The Leafe and Ablaze In Hatred, this quartet isn't some group of kids figuring out how to plug in an amp. They emerged in 2024 to pivot away from their previous projects and focus on a specific brand of gloom. By pulling together a collective history of melodic death and doom, they’ve built a foundation that sounds weathered and experienced right out of the gate.
Finland is the world capital of misery for a reason, and "Timeless Forms Of Desolation" fits that stereotype like a spiked leather jacket. Horizon Of Aeon takes that classic Suomi gloom and gives it a punchy, modern edge that keeps it from sounding like a dusty relic of the nineties. There is a lot of weight in the riffs on tracks like "Aedis Tenebrae," where the guitars don't just sit there; they actually do something interesting. The production is punchy and lets the low-end rumble in your chest, which is exactly where this kind of metal needs to land.
The vibe here is all about the crushing flow of time and how much it sucks to be human, which is standard fare, but they sell it with some serious passion. "Until The Darkness Claims Us" is a great example of how they balance that heavy, doomy weight with some actual melody that doesn't sound wimpy. The keys add a layer of cold atmosphere without drowning out the guitars, keeping the focus on the actual riffs. It’s a balanced attack that manages to be depressing and aggressive at the same time, avoiding the trap of becoming too soft or overly theatrical.
Miska’s vocals are a standout, providing a rough, gutteral presence that grounds the more melodic moments of the record. Songs like "Devilish Mist Of Deformed" and "Spectral Echoes" show a band that has spent a lot of time practicing together, as the transitions are smooth and the drumming provides a steady, thumping heartbeat. It’s clear these guys have chemistry; they aren't just playing parts, they are locked into a specific groove. The songs have enough hooks to stay in your head after the music stops, which is a rare feat in the oversaturated world of dark metal.
While it might not be the most extreme thing you’ll hear this year, "Timeless Forms Of Desolation" is a professional and engaging debut. It’s got enough bite to satisfy the death metal fans and enough atmosphere to keep the goths happy in their basements. Horizon Of Aeon has put out a collection of songs that sound like they were written by people who actually care about the craft. If you want something that sounds like the sun is never coming back up, this is a top-tier choice for your playlist.
