Mexico's veteran metal commandos Mortuary originally rose from the underground depths back in 1988. They quickly cemented their position in extreme music history with their classic 1989 demo "Where Death Takes Your Soul", followed by the devastating 1990 debut full-length album "Blackened Images". After resurfacing on Horror Pain Gore Death Productions for a compilation appearance in 2021, these veteran executioners return to unleash severe auditory destruction.

“Great Black Earth” wastes no time throwing the listener into fast riffs, hammering drums and vicious vocal lines. The whole EP runs on aggression and speed, pulling influence from the late 80s and early 90s death/thrash scene without sounding lifeless or stuck in nostalgia. There is a raw spirit flowing through these songs, the kind that reminds you why this style became dangerous in the first place. Fans of Slayer, Kreator and Sepultura will feel the violent energy running through this release.

The guitar work attacks constantly with sharp riffing and frantic tempo changes, while the rhythm section drives the songs forward with destructive force. “Holy War” and “Cut Their Heads” explode with feral speed, while the title track pushes darker and more sinister territory. “Black Superstition” closes the EP with the same evil atmosphere that hangs over the entire release. Mortuary sounds vicious throughout, refusing to soften their attack for modern trends or studio tricks.

What helps this EP stand above many modern death/thrash releases is its authenticity. The music sounds fueled by obsession for classic extreme metal instead of calculated revivalism. There is an evil aura surrounding these songs, mixed with relentless aggression and old school hatred. The production stays rough enough to preserve that underground spirit while allowing every riff and drum attack to strike properly. Nothing here drifts into lifeless retro worship, the band attack these songs with real fire.

“Great Black Earth” is a strong return from Mortuary and another violent chapter in their long history. It delivers speed, destruction and dark atmosphere in a compact form without wasting a second. Old school death/thrash fanatics should have no trouble finding plenty to sink their teeth into here. Mortuary still sounds dangerous after all these years, and this EP proves their blackened attack remains alive and deadly.
