Danish death metal unit Thorium formed thirty years ago in the Scandinavian underground, enduring across decades with an uncompromising and authentic approach to extreme music. The band includes guitarists JP Storm and Jose Cruz, alongside the long-running rhythm section of drummer Daniel Preisler and bassist Jesper Nielsen, with Michael Hvolgaard Andersen handling vocals. This current lineup represents the longest-lasting stable configuration in the band's history and previously recorded the highly praised 2022 album "Danmark". Over their lengthy career, the band has frequently brought their aggressive sound to various festival stages, including Aalborg Metalfest and Metal Magic Festival.

Thirty years into their journey, these veteran musicians return with their seventh full-length album, "Suburban Rot". The record represents a dark, personal creative chapter, utilizing decades of underground experience to forge a sinister atmosphere. Produced by guitarist JP Storm and mixed and mastered by producer Tue Madsen at Antfarm Studio, the material possesses a crushing and detailed sonic profile. The themes of human collapse and urban decay are visually represented by the artwork from Venezuelan artist John Quevedo Janssens.

The musical direction heavily mirrors the history of Danish extreme metal while drawing on the distinct backgrounds of the musicians. The guitar work combines a historic regional legacy with a darker, groove-driven melodic edge. Songs like "Abra Macabre", "Endless Disgust", and "Open Wounds" establish a gritty, traditional death metal atmosphere. The performances remain grounded and authentic, focusing on well-crafted riffs and structured rhythms.

Further into the record, tracks such as "MG42", "Suburban Rot", and "Shelter" maintain the mid-tempo drive and aggressive focus. The vocal performance anchors the compositions with a steady, brutal presence. The mid-section of the album shows a band executing their style with experience, ensuring that the rhythm section and the dual-guitar attack lock together seamlessly.

The final stretch of the album, featuring "The Collector", "Bring The Children To Me", "The Undead", and "Crucified", solidifies the record as a well-crafted addition to the band’s catalog. The production allows the natural grit of the instrumentation to emerge without artificial enhancements. Ultimately, the record stands as a highly respectable and executed death metal release that honors the band’s long legacy in the underground.
