Maladie were formed in 2009 in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and have built their name on a strange, restless mix of progressive black metal, avant-garde extreme metal and their own plague metal identity. Their music has never been built for casual background listening. It is twisted, layered and full of strange turns, with a sick theatrical edge that places them outside the usual extreme metal line. Over the years, Maladie have become a collective with a very personal sound, one that treats extremity as art, disease and madness in the same poisoned cup.
The record operates through massive blocks of sound, trading sheer sonic violence for calculated, dark atmospheres. "Vortex Of Monotony" opens with heavy, shifting structures, establishing a claustrophobic tone. The band transitions into the sprawling lengths of "Behind All Suns" and "Too Old To Die," where intricate chord progressions mesh with harsh vocal delivery.
The core of the release rests on massive arrangements like "The Unknowable" and "On Inaccessible Paths Part II." These tracks cross the ten-minute mark, utilizing a wide sonic palette to create an unsettling environment. Giannis Nakos from Remedy Art Design provided the artwork, which visually represents this dark musical journey.
The title track, "The Dance Of Tragedies," along with "Embrace Our Curse," relies heavily on the juxtaposition of black metal elements against progressive orchestration. The songwriting remains unpredictable, forcing the listener to follow a winding road of aggression. "On Inaccessible Paths Part I" provides the final buildup before the massive conclusion. It is a creative, defiant extreme metal record that commands respect for its refusal to compromise. "The Dance Of Tragedies" is a complex beast. The German collective avoids standard verse-chorus patterns, choosing a fluid style of extreme metal composition.
