Skullchurn is a new death metal formation built by Dutch and Czech musicians with past and present links to Burial Remains, Grim Fate, Massive Assault and Symbtomy. With "Of Death And Rebirth", the band steps into the underground with a debut demo rooted in the early bloodline of death metal, when the genre was raw, rotten and far away from studio luxury.

"Of Death And Rebirth" comes across as vile, fast and stripped down. Skullchurn goes for old school death metal with a thrashy edge, closer

to the primitive days of the genre. The riffs are mean, the pace rarely gives mercy, and the production has that decayed tape-trader flavor, rough enough to serve the songs without turning everything into mud. The horror angle also works. The lyrics deal with death, decay and unholy rebirth through a surreal, cult-movie lens, giving the demo a sick atmosphere. Songs like "Cenotaph Of Gore", "Endless Epidemic" and "The Faceless One" stay in the same rotten pit, keeping the release focused and savage.

The downside is clear too. This demo does not offer many surprises, and some parts follow familiar paths for anyone raised on early death metal filth. The songwriting is effective, with no useless fat, although a bit more variation could have made the attack sharper across the whole release. As a first strike, though, it does its job well. "Of Death And Rebirth" is a nasty underground demo made for listeners who want death metal raw, thrashing and rotten at the core. The demo release has its limits, yet the foundation is strong enough to make this debut worth attention. Short, filthy, aggressive and honest.
