Red Vinter is a doom/death metal band from St. Paul, Minnesota. Their sound is built around slow tempos, low tuned riffs, grim vocals, and a bleak atmosphere. After their debut "Lumbering Menace", the band returns with "Ghost In The Fog", their second full length release, recorded at 14:59 Studios in Minneapolis.

"Ghost In The Fog" has the right shape for this kind of music. The riffs crawl, the vocals stay rough, and the whole album has a cold, heavy mood that does not try to dress itself up. "Cryptic Site" gives a clear idea of where Red Vinter is heading, with fear, confusion, and doom pressed into a slow death metal frame.

The problem is that the album sometimes stays too close to one lane. The sound is heavy enough, the atmosphere is there, and the band does not sound lost, though several passages could use more variation and sharper turns. The pace can work in their favor, then a few sections start to blur together before the next stronger riff appears.

Production wise, "Ghost In The Fog" has a raw, underground character that helps the material. It is not too clean, and that is a good call for Red Vinter. The bass and guitars create a heavy base, while Mike Bullock’s vocals add the right amount of dread. Some ideas hit the mark, others pass by without leaving much behind.

"Ghost In The Fog" is a decent doom/death metal album with a clear direction and a few really good moments. Red Vinter has the sound, the attitude, and the atmosphere, though the songwriting needs more cuts, turns, and stronger hooks to reach the next level. Good enough to respect, not strong enough to praise too much.
