Vorax is a Zurich based death metal band with Beni on vocals, Simon on lead guitar, Benj on rhythm guitar, Frugi on bass guitar, and Flavio on drums. The band works in a fully DIY way, handling its own recording and production, with artwork by Jon. On "Volcano Shock", Vorax deals in old school death metal with a volcanic, prehistoric theme, built around lava, extinction, predators, and survival.
"Volcano Shock" is a raw and aggressive album that goes straight for the ribs. Vorax uses low tuned riffing, rough vocals, pounding drums, and a primitive atmosphere without dressing the music up. The album has the spirit of late 80s and early 90s death metal, with a sound that is mean, physical, and stripped down.
The analog production is a big part of the character here. The guitars have a rough edge, the drums sound human, and the vocals sit in front with enough bite to lead the attack. The album was tracked and mastered on tape, mixed through old gear, and that choice gives "Volcano Shock" a dirtier, more alive character than many modern death metal releases.
The songwriting is at its best when Vorax locks into mid tempo stomps and then burst into faster riff attacks. Songs like "Magma Ocean", "Volcano Shock", "Hunter Killer", and "The Great Dying" show the band’s best side, simple structures, violent riffs, and a caveman mood that serves the theme. The dinosaur and disaster concept could have turned silly, here it stays brutal and focused.
The weak point is that some parts run on the same riff idea longer than needed, and the vocals do not change shape much across the album. At 33 minutes, this is not a major problem, it just holds the album a little back. "Volcano Shock" is a strong, honest death metal release with raw production, good riffs, and a nasty prehistoric atmosphere. Vorax does not waste time, they crush, roar, and leave ash behind.
