Hyena and Risingfall come from opposite sides of the world, though their approach is rooted in the same old school spirit. Formed in Cajamarca, Peru, Hyena built its reputation through energetic live activity and a style deeply connected to the early years of traditional heavy metal, mixing speed, street level attitude and memorable choruses. Risingfall, from Tokyo, Japan, have steadily grown since their debut full length, presenting a style that blends classic heavy metal with melodic Japanese touches and a heroic atmosphere. “Heavy Metal Heroes” brings the two bands together for four songs that celebrate underground metal without unnecessary embellishments. The split serves as a bridge between continents and shows how strong this scene remains when bands focus on writing songs instead of chasing trends.
“Heavy Metal Heroes” captures two disparate entities focused on speed and aggression. Hyena offers a frantic pace on “The Evil Monk” and “Tokyo Nights,” relying on high-pitched wails and aggressive riffing that captures a primitive energy. The recording quality is thin, emphasizing the cymbals and sharp guitar lines over low-end depth. Risingfall contrast this with a slightly more melodic approach on “Rock Forever” and “Twighlight,” focusing on dual-guitar harmonies and rhythmic precision. The percussion is snappy, keeping the momentum high throughout their contribution. The song structures are rigid, adhering strictly to classic blueprints without deviation. While the songwriting lacks variety, the performance remains dedicated to the roots of the genre.
