Formed in Barcelona in 2018, Pvrgatorii have built their reputation through a raw blend of black metal, punk and noisy extremity that they describe as "Black Metal Ov Death." Across their debut, "Con Las Uñas Clavadas En La Cara De Dios" in 2021 and its follow-up, "Marching Through Thee Night Guided By A Black Fire" in 2024, the duo stayed committed to stripped-down, hostile music rooted in the underground. Their line-up remains minimal, with Darth Dvnkel handling guitars and vocals while L'Ombra covers drums, giving the material a stripped-back chemistry that refuses unnecessary embellishment.
Their work has always favored instinct over refinement, drawing equally from first-wave black metal and crust-infused punk without drifting into rock-driven territory. The new EP continues that path while expanding the band's visual presentation through an extensive sixteen-page fanzine documenting their history, philosophy and the Barcelona underground that shaped them, making the physical edition more than just another vinyl pressing.
"Profane Rites For Cursed Times" is a short release that wastes little time and stays focused on one objective. The production, recorded by L'Ombra at the Dvngeon Of Llull in December 2025, is rough without becoming impossible to follow. The guitars scrape through every song with an acidic edge, the drums remain primitive and relentless, and the
vocals sit high in the mix with a rabid delivery that strengthens the oppressive atmosphere. Punk rhythms constantly surface beneath the black metal framework, giving the songs urgency without turning them into straightforward d-beat assaults. The material revolves around spiritual decay, collapse and blasphemous imagery, keeping the lyrical direction aligned with the bleak musical approach.
The EP's greatest quality is its consistency, every composition serves the same bleak vision and never drifts into filler. At the same time, its limited running time also exposes a lack of variation. The songwriting relies heavily on one emotional register, and several passages pass by without leaving a lasting impression once the record ends. There are moments where a stronger melodic hook or a more distinctive riff could have elevated the material beyond its constant barrage.
Even so, the atmosphere remains oppressive throughout, and the combination of black metal malice with punk urgency gives the EP enough character to separate it from countless underground releases built on similar foundations. The accompanying fanzine adds genuine value for anyone interested in the band's background and artistic direction, reinforcing the release as a complete physical package instead of just another collectible. "Profane Rites For Cursed Times" succeeds through honesty and commitment to its vision, although the songwriting does not always reach the same level as its atmosphere or presentation.
