Shiny New Toyz is a five piece outfit from Vermont blending alternative metal, progressive metal, post hardcore and hard rock into a style that refuses to settle on one formula. Fronted by vocalist Suzie Tremblay, with guitarists Shawn Toussaint and John Notaro, bassist Brad Woodward and drummer Forrest Thomas, the band draws from modern progressive metal as much as 90s alternative rock. Their songwriting revolves around shifting rhythms, layered guitar work and expressive vocal lines, moving between aggression and melody without locking into one approach for long. Across their first releases they have focused on emotionally charged material, building songs around personal struggles, reflection and resilience instead of horror themes or fantasy imagery. Their second EP, "Lore", continues along that path while expanding the progressive side of their songwriting and giving each member more opportunity to shape the overall sound.
Mixed by Vincent Freeman and mastered by Michel Doucet, "Lore" presents a balanced production where every instrument is easy to distinguish without stripping away the heaviness. The guitar work alternates between angular riffs, atmospheric passages and unusual rhythmic changes, while the rhythm section locks into intricate patterns that stop the songs from becoming predictable. Suzie Tremblay is the focal point throughout the EP, shifting from melodic singing to aggressive vocal attacks with convincing control. The lyrical direction revolves around grief, inner conflict, resilience and feminine symbolism, avoiding empty slogans in favor of ideas that come across with sincerity.
At times the progressive arrangements become a little too busy and some sections stretch longer than necessary, reducing the impact of riffs that deserve more space. The mixture of alternative rock, progressive metal and post hardcore also lacks a sharper focus in places, making several transitions sound less cohesive than intended. Even with those shortcomings, the EP contains enough memorable moments, strong vocal performances and thoughtful songwriting to maintain interest throughout. Shiny New Toyz has ambition and musical skill in equal measure, and "Lore" shows a band willing to experiment without abandoning the heavier side of its sound. It is an enjoyable release that succeeds more often than it misses, even if a tighter approach would have strengthened the final result.
