Tyraels Ascension is a US metal band formed around guitarists Kevin McNeil and Sean Searls, vocalist Alex Theesen, bassist Adam Bodkin, and drummer Brandon Dorman. The band arrived in 2024 with “Hell Walker,” the opening chapter of a planned trilogy centered on Tyrael, a battle scarred angel descending into a ruined Earth to defend its people against demonic enemies. Its mix of melodic death metal, thrash, and modern heavy metal gave the debut broad reach across the underground, backed by an elaborate fantasy concept and guitar led songwriting.
The project later expanded into a video game released for Nintendo Switch, using the band’s music as part of Tyrael’s continuing conflict. “Grave Seeker,” issued through Rottweiler Records, returns to that world two years later and places the angel deeper inside the cost of duty, sacrifice, and spiritual warfare. The lineup remains unchanged, linking the second chapter closely to the sound introduced on “Hell Walker.”
“Grave Seeker” follows a darker route than its predecessor, working through melodic death metal, thrash, and modern heavy metal without reducing the concept to decoration. The production places the two guitars at the front, where rhythmic precision, bright lead lines and frequent solos shape most of the album, while the drums stay firm and the bass sits lower in the mix. Alex Theesen uses an aggressive vocal attack suited to the war torn subject, and the lyrics remain fixed on sacrifice, doubt, duty, redemption, and the damage left by endless conflict. “No End In Sight,” “Bittersweet,” and “The Summoning” show the album’s range through speed, melancholy, heavy riffing, and broad choruses, with enough variation to stop the central concept from becoming one long chapter.
The writing is disciplined, although several melodic turns return in similar forms, and the storyline occasionally speaks louder than the individual songs. That reduces the album’s impact across repeated plays, since parts of the second half begin to merge after the initial rush has passed. The guitar work remains the main reason to return, especially when the leads add tension or sorrow beyond simple decoration, while the vocal performance adds a human edge beneath the fantasy setting. “Grave Seeker” is a good continuation of “Hell Walker,” energetic and carefully arranged, though its ideas are more dependable than exceptional. It is a respectable melodic extreme metal album, with enough quality to justify attention and several areas where the songwriting needs greater distinction.
