Formed in 2022, Hanry are a five member French post rock band featuring Jean Anaël Aubaux on guitars and synth, Hadrien Benazet on guitars, Clément Champigny on drums, Anthony Leliard on bass, guitars and synth, and Marc Mifune on piano, synth and cello. Their early discography includes the "Panorama" EP from 2022, the single "Cyclone" from 2023, and the "Disruption" EP from 2025, their first release through Pelagic Records. A nationally broadcast appearance at Trans Musicales in Rennes brought wider exposure, followed by a KEXP live session. "What Came From Silence" is their debut full length album, presenting the complete five member lineup across eight compositions. Three guitars, bass, drums, piano, synths and cello place Hanry in the cinematic wing of European post rock, with ambient and electronica embedded deep in the arrangements.
Written during a long winter in Brittany, "What Came From Silence" lasts forty five minutes and was produced and mixed in the band’s own studio, with Jean Anaël Aubaux and Clément Champigny involved in the engineering. Aloïs Lecerf created the artwork, using a fractured silhouette and rising light to mirror the contrast between restraint and eruption. The music begins with glassy guitar figures, low electronic tones and restrained percussion, then expands into saturated distortion and broad crescendos.
Each guitar takes a separate role, one drawing harmonic lines, another working the lower register and the third adding delay, noise and fragmented melody. Bass frequently steps beyond support into melodic counterlines, and the cello deepens the darker sections, stopping short of sentimentality. Drums use cymbal swells, tom patterns and measured pulses to guide each escalation, while piano and synths connect the quieter material with the larger climaxes. Mariposa’s contribution on "Phantom Rush" adds extra depth near the end. The production remains spacious during the busiest moments, allowing the layers to stay distinct as the mix expands.
"What Came From Silence" is disciplined, immersive and carefully assembled, though its emotional range exceeds its structural range. Greater variation in pacing would strengthen the result. As a debut, it establishes Hanry as a band with scale, detail and precision, alongside a need to break its own formula on the next release.
