Grimveil is an international two member band formed by Simon Lindgren of Tårfödd and Revenant, whose other work includes Order Of Nosferat, Sarkrista, Siechknecht, and Velmorth. Lindgren handles the music, songwriting, mixing, and mastering, while Revenant provides vocals, lyrics, nature samples, and the vocal mix. Their connection began during work on a Tårfödd album and developed into a separate band centred on forests, solitude, night, and the unease of untouched landscapes. One member comes from northern Sweden and the other from northern Germany, a split that places the project within a distinctly northern setting without reducing it to postcard scenery. Grimveil uses the limited lineup to create long compositions built from guitar layers, acoustic writing, restrained keyboards, percussion, and a single vocal approach. “Beneath The Veil Of Silent Woods” is the first full length from the band, released by Purity Through Fire on digipack CD.
“Beneath The Veil Of Silent Woods” contains eight songs and an hour long, with most of its pace fixed in midtempo and downtempo motion, interrupted by brief accelerations, while the compositions revolve around sombre melodic riffs, recurring chord cycles, acoustic stretches, restrained synth layers, and percussion arranged for gradual changes, not constant turns. Guitar harmonies gather around a central motif, disappear, then return with added distortion, altered drumming, or a shift in tempo, giving the album depth when the main melody has enough character. The folk side appears through rural melodic turns and acoustic guitars, without dance rhythms or ornate arrangements, while the black metal core remains cold, cyclical, and rooted in long form writing.
When a song circles the same figure for several minutes, the length exposes how little has changed, and tighter editing would have made parts of the second half more severe. Revenant’s torn rasp sits high in the mix and adds human strain against the colder background, though the vocal attack changes very little across the album and occasionally flattens the emotional range. The production places the guitars wide, the drums deeper, and the synths low behind them, with enough separation to follow the layered writing and enough raw texture to stop the atmosphere from turning into decorative ambience.
The lyrics stay fixed on fog, roots, trees, fading trails, buried memory, and forests presented as watchful places where human presence has little importance, though the imagery becomes predictable after repeated references to mist, silence, and ancient ground. “Beneath The Veil Of Silent Woods” is a disciplined debut with focused imagery, detailed melodic writing, and a coherent atmosphere, though its extended structures ask more patience than every song earns.
