Tabernakel is a German one man black metal band built around Ignis Nefandus, the sole musician and producer behind “Scheintaufe.” This debut full length presents his work as a complete unit, since performance, tracking, engineering, mixing and mastering all bear his name. The sessions took place during winter 2025/26 in Wiesbaden, Germany, and Boersch, Alsace. Iconoclasm Conquest and Death Ecstasis Productions handle the physical edition, with LP and cassette versions accompanying the digital release.
The band’s roots lie in early black metal, drawing most visibly from the cold melodic language and violent momentum associated with formative Immortal, Dodheimsgard, Ulver and Forgotten Woods. Those influences define the broad territory, though Tabernakel has a solitary profile shaped by one creator from the first note to the final master. “Scheintaufe” introduces a band devoted to atmosphere, riff construction and severity, with studio spectacle absent from the equation.
Spanning nine tracks and a little less than fifty minutes, “Scheintaufe” is built from tremolo guitar lines, pounding rhythms, dissonant chord shapes, distant rasped vocals and dark melodic sequences. Raw grain and wide dynamics shape the production, preserving the physical attack and leaving the fidelity intact. Guitars dominate the mix, their serrated tone framed by firm percussion and an understated low end.
The longer compositions develop through linked riff cycles and measured tempo changes, building tension through gradual escalation rather than abrupt ornamentation. This approach produces several absorbing stretches where melody, aggression and atmosphere lock together with little wasted motion. A number of ideas remain in place after their tension has faded, especially when one guitar pattern returns with minimal alteration. Similar tonal colors blur parts of the second half, and several extended cycles dilute their own impact before reaching the next change.
Abrupt rhythmic shifts and bleak melodic turns restore momentum whenever the pacing begins to drag. The early wave references appear inside coherent songs, not as obvious tribute fragments, and the sound has enough personal detail to escape plain imitation. “Scheintaufe” is a potent debut with strong riff craft, a firm atmosphere and enough variation to sustain its considerable span. Tighter editing would have made its most severe moments hit deeper, though the final result remains focused, substantial and cold to the core.
