Finsmoonth formed in Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2020, working at the intersection of melodic black metal and atmospheric post rock. Organic harmonies, extended arrangements and spiritual intensity have shaped the band’s music since its formation, with poetry and introspection placed above blunt aggression. Its lyrical focus reaches into despair, romance, psychological unrest and the private damage left by loss. “Chrysalis Of Astral Tears” is the band’s second album, following several years spent developing this deeply inward approach. Released through Disaster Records, it contains six compositions in forty one minutes. The title reflects transformation through suffering, presenting pain as a stage between collapse and recovery. This emphasis gives Finsmoonth a defined emotional direction, although the constant sorrow can become restrictive when every idea reaches for the same wounded grandeur.

Sessions for “Chrysalis Of Astral Tears” took place between January and May 2025 at Benji Studio, Insidious Soundlab and Cryptid’s Lair, with Jafar Sadik and Januaryo Hardy handling the engineering. Hardy also contributed chants, selected guitar parts and synthesizers, while Isa Bellum added vocals to “Luminous Unveiling” and “Presomnal.” Januaryo Hardy completed the mixing and mastering at Insidious Soundlab in June 2025 and shared production duties with Finsmoonth.

Music was composed by Irwin Dwi Ryanto, Ade Zulkifli and Micco Rullyanto, with lyrics written by Tino Guruh Putra. Long melodic guitar lines rise through tremolo picking, layered chords and broad synthesizer textures, while the drums shift between rapid attacks and calmer post rock motion. The mix offers defined separation across most of the album, though the cymbals and keyboards occasionally crowd the upper range and reduce the raw edge of the guitars. Vocals arrive as wounded screams and solemn chants, adding human strain to lyrics centered on grief, fading hope and gradual healing.

Several climaxes follow a similar route, building through layered guitars, rising keyboards and faster percussion, which blunts surprise during the latter half. The poetic imagery can also become excessive, especially when tears, light, wings, dawn and inner skies appear in close succession. Finsmoonth remains emotionally sincere throughout, and the melodic writing contains enough depth to rise above the stretched pacing. “Chrysalis Of Astral Tears” is an atmospheric, mournful second album whose personal ache is easy to grasp, even when tighter editing and greater emotional contrast would have produced a deeper impact.
