Jehovah On Death formed in Athens in 2020, with the enigmatic Señora Dolorosa leading a largely concealed lineup. Several EPs introduced the band’s blend of occult rock, proto metal and Catholic imagery before the arrival of its first full length album, “Lágrimas De Oro.” Spanish religious art, medieval superstition, biblical vengeance and ceremonial dread shape its character, presenting worship as something bloody, feverish and disturbing.
“Lágrimas De Oro” with nine songs and in thirty five minutes, joining dark melodies, measured rhythms and classic rock guitar work under a heavy religious atmosphere. The material was recorded at Feedback Studios, mixed at Zero Gravity Studios by Terry Nikas and mastered at The Void Studio by Pieter G. Kloos, with artwork by Arcano XV and layout by Francesco Gemelli. The production has warmth and separation, placing Señora Dolorosa at the front while the guitars coil around her voice with restrained distortion and melodic leads. Her performance dominates the album, shifting between solemn prayer, sensual temptation and cold judgment with impressive control.
The lyrics circle devotion, death, suffering and sacred violence, drawing their imagery from Spanish Catholic tradition without burying the songs under endless symbolism. Several choruses arrive quickly and remain in the mind, while the solos add heat without turning each composition into an excuse for excess. A few melodic turns are predictable, and parts of the songwriting remain too attached to established occult rock formulas, reducing the menace promised by the imagery. “Lágrimas De Oro” is a focused and absorbing debut, elevated by an excellent vocalist, purposeful production and enough melodic craft to rise above imitation, even when its ancestry is plain.
