Lifeswallower is a four-piece band formed on the south coast of England by Benedict Harris Hayes, Tom Humphrey, James Moffatt and Ben Ottridge. The project began through informal rehearsals built around 1990s death metal covers, with the four musicians eventually moving toward original material. Their background brings together several areas of heavy music, with progressive metal at the centre and noticeable elements of death metal, thrash metal and technical extreme metal.
The band uses this broad musical background to create compositions where intricate guitar work, shifting rhythms and forceful drumming sit alongside heavier sections. The self titled EP marks their first official release and arrives through Manchester based Prog On! Recordings.
"Lifeswallower" presents four songs built around intricate arrangements, frequent rhythmic changes and a strong connection between progressive metal and extreme metal. "Defy My World" opens the EP with an aggressive combination of technical guitar work and death metal intensity, while "The Trees Hide Their Bodies" introduces more movement between heavier and
more progressive ideas. "Abandon The Body Of Rot" brings further emphasis on complex riff construction and forceful percussion, while "Compound Fears" closes the release with another mixture of progressive structures and extreme metal aggression.
The production gives the guitars enough definition for the detailed playing to remain present, while the drums retain their impact and the vocals sit firmly within the heavier character of the material. Lyrically, the song titles point toward bleak and unsettling themes, complementing the darker musical atmosphere. The EP has a compact presentation, with enough variation across its four songs to prevent the material from becoming a single continuous exercise in technical playing.
There is considerable musical information packed into these compositions, and some sections require closer attention before their details become apparent. The progressive side can occasionally dominate the arrangements, making certain moments less immediate, though the death metal and thrash influences add useful aggression and contrast. "Lifeswallower" is a technically focused debut with a distinctly extreme metal core, built for listeners who enjoy intricate songwriting, shifting rhythms and demanding guitar work.
