Coven Japan emerged in 2016 under the name Coven, founded by vocalist Taka and guitarist Akihiro, before adopting the name Coven Japan in 2019. The band has built its catalogue around traditional heavy metal, drawing from early Iron Maiden, Tokyo Blade, Saxon and Riot, alongside elements of seventies hard rock and Japanese metal. Their first full length, “Earthlings”, arrived in 2023, following the earlier “The Advert” EP from 2017. Since then, Coven Japan have expanded their presence through two European tours, appearing at festivals including Up The Hammers and Muskelrock. The lineup on “Promised Land” is handled by Taka on vocals and bass, with Akihiro covering guitars, drums and bass, giving the album the sound of a compact two man studio lineup.
“Promised Land” presents eight songs built around melodic twin guitar lines, classic heavy metal riffing and vocal melodies that lean into an epic atmosphere. Akihiro’s guitar work is central throughout, with harmonized leads and melodic figures giving the songs their main musical color, while the rhythm section stays focused on traditional metal structures. Taka’s vocals combine English and Japanese lyrics, an element that gives the record a distinct regional character without changing its musical language.
The production, mixed by Taka and Akihiro and mastered by Arthur Rizk, brings a modern recording quality to the traditional instrumentation, keeping the guitars prominent and the rhythm section firmly placed underneath them. Guest vocals from Tomas “Witchfinder” Ericson of Helvetets Port appear on “Samurai Rising”, while Niels Bang of Animalize contributes to “Breath Of The Distant Land”. The songwriting occasionally reaches for a larger, more epic scale, especially through the twin guitar arrangements and extended melodic sections.
At around forty five minutes, the album has enough material to establish its atmosphere, although some compositions could use more variation in their internal movement. “Promised Land” is a traditional heavy metal release with Japanese and European influences meeting in a straightforward format, built around guitars, melodic vocals and classic songwriting values. It has a strong focus on melody and atmosphere, with the occasional uneven moment preventing it from reaching a higher level.
