Lord Gryphus is an anonymous three piece death metal band from Austin, Texas, built around masks, ritual imagery and themes involving death, sacrifice, colonial violence, cultural erasure and imposed religion. Their debut album, "Summoning The King Of Death", draws heavily from the early extreme metal tradition, with Morbid Angel, Gorefest, Sepultura, Grave, Autopsy, Incantation and Sinister among the obvious names connected to its musical direction. The band uses the Andean condor, Vultur gryphus, as the central symbol behind its concept, linking death with transcendence and ancestral spirituality.
The guest appearances also connect the album with different corners of the contemporary underground. Reese Alavi, vocalist of Texas death metal band Creeping Death, contributes vocals, while Mike De León, associated with Flesh Hoarder and Soulfly, adds a guitar solo. Sepultura are represented through a version of "Troops Of Doom", taken from the Brazilian band's early period and placed firmly within Lord Gryphus' old school approach.
"Summoning The King Of Death" was recorded at Red Nova Ranch in Bastrop, Texas, with Jeff Henson handling the instrumental tracking, reamping, guitars and bass, while vocals were recorded and produced by Kike Valderrama at Buziraco's Lair Studio. Mixing and mastering were handled by Andrés Mauricio Gallón at Sound Blast Studios in Armenia, Colombia. The production preserves a raw underground character, with guitars built around heavy riffing, distorted leads and a strong death metal attack.
The drums have a dry, organic presence that supports the primitive atmosphere of the material. Vocally, the album stays within a deep and aggressive death metal approach, matching lyrics centered on sacrifice, ancestral traditions, religious oppression and death worship. The title track places the album's ritual concept at the center, while "The Grand Spectacle", "Bloodpath Dominion" and "Sharpening The Guillotine" establish a grim atmosphere through compact songwriting and old school riff structures.
"Troops Of Doom" is a fitting addition, connecting the band's sound directly with one of its major influences. The album has enough variation in tempo and riff movement to avoid becoming monotonous across its short running time, although some ideas could have been developed further. As a debut, it presents a focused version of primitive death metal with a strong conceptual side and production that respects the underground nature of the music.
