Sworn is a Bergen based Norwegian melodic black metal band formed in 2005 by guitarist and songwriter Christoffer Kjørsvik, initially developing from a solitary project into a full band. Their debut, "The Alleviation", arrived in 2007 and established the foundation for a career focused on dark melodies, atmospheric black metal and emotionally charged songwriting. Over the following years, Sworn appeared at European festivals including Summer Breeze, Ragnarök and Ultima Ratio, while also touring with Behemoth, Aborted and Helrunar.
The band released "A Journey Told Through Fire" in 2023, a record that received strong attention for its combination of melodic writing, bleak atmosphere and intensity. The current lineup features Max Wilson on vocals, Christoffer Kjørsvik on guitars, bass and synthesizers, Gøran Hope on guitars and Tom Ian Klungland on drums. Kjørsvik handles all music, with lyrics written by Kjørsvik and Wilson.
"Null Crowned the Infinite" takes Sworn further into cosmic darkness, using themes of creation, dissolution, time and the fragility of existence as the lyrical core. The six compositions move through melodic black metal with long atmospheric stretches, aggressive guitar work, harsh vocals and a broad use of synthesizers that deepen the feeling of emptiness surrounding the material. "The Starless Origin" reaches the twelve minute mark and gives the album an expansive opening statement, while "Fracture of Aeons" brings a more aggressive attack through heavier guitar work and faster drumming.
The production from Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios gives the guitars and drums a powerful presence, with the atmospheric layers remaining prominent throughout the album. The recording process took place at Sworn Studio for the instruments apart from drums, while the drums were recorded at Taakeheimen Lydrike with Semming Haraldsen engineering. Pär Olofsson provides the artwork, adding a suitably cosmic visual dimension to the release. Across its forty four minutes, the album moves between melancholy, aggression and vast atmospheric sections, with melody remaining central to the songwriting.
Sworn presents a mature form of melodic black metal here, one that places atmosphere and melody alongside heavier passages without allowing either side to dominate the whole record. The songwriting has enough variation to sustain the longer compositions, while the production gives the album a strong modern presentation. "Null Crowned the Infinite" is a dark, ambitious release with substantial atmosphere, memorable melodic writing and enough aggression to prevent the cosmic themes from becoming overly abstract.
