Hanternoz formed in France in 2006 and has built a small but distinct discography around pagan black metal, Breton folklore and regional history. Led by Hyver, the band has released three full lengths across two decades, with “Au Fleuve De Loire” appearing in 2021 after a long gap from the debut. The lineup for “A Hed An Noz, A Noz, A Noz” features Hyver on guitars and vocals, Sparda on bass, choirs and organs, Simon on drums, Stefan on additional guitars, mixing and mastering, Jeff on flutes and bagpipes, with Joanna Maeyens contributing vocals and the oil painting used for the cover.
“A Hed An Noz, A Noz, A Noz” is a pagan black metal release rooted deeply in Breton folklore, historical events and stories of death, fear, memory and the supernatural. The seven compositions stretch across close to an hour, allowing the music to move between black metal passages, melodic guitar work, atmospheric sections and traditional Breton instrumentation, with flutes, bagpipes and organ adding a distinctly regional colour.
The production, handled by Stefan, gives the guitars and vocals enough presence while allowing the folk instruments to remain part of the overall sound. The lyrical themes are closely tied to figures such as the Ankou, the Devil of Quimper, the Pest Rider and the Forest King, creating a unified atmosphere across the release. The music has an old-world quality, with long compositions that favour atmosphere and storytelling over quick impact. It is an album aimed at listeners who want black metal with a strong folkloric foundation and a pronounced sense of place.
