Meurtrier was formed in Québec City in 2023 by musicians with roots in the Québec and Montréal underground metal scene. The lineup on "Messe De Fer" features William “Will” Verrault and Martin Paquet on guitars, Anthony “Tony” Verrault on vocals, Jeff Tremblay on bass, and Fred Tremblay on drums. The band first appeared with a demo in 2024 through Jawbreaker Records, followed by a new lineup and a more developed visual presentation for its debut full-length.
Their musical direction draws heavily from classic speed and heavy metal, with references to the mid-1980s European and American scenes reflected through fast guitar work, forceful rhythms, melodic passages, and a dark atmosphere. French-language lyrics form a central part of the album, focusing on occult mysticism, epic imagery, darkness, and themes connected to steel, conflict, exile, and death. Meurtrier has also made a limited number of live appearances, where the songs are presented with an energetic stage approach led by Tony Verrault.
In forty-four minutes "Messe De Fer" presents nine songs with a strong emphasis on speed metal aggression and traditional heavy metal melody. The guitars dominate the musical picture, moving between fast riffing, melodic leads, and heavier sections that give the album a distinctly old-school metal character. The French vocals add another dimension to the material, especially during the darker and more epic moments, while the rhythm section maintains a fast and forceful pulse throughout the album.
The production appears aimed at preserving the raw edge of the style, keeping the focus on guitars, vocals, bass, and drums. "Clandestin", "Cri Silencieux", "Messe De Fer", "Bête De L’Ombre", "Sans Trône", "Exil", "Suis-Moi", "Fatal Ennemi", and "Meurtrier" form a coherent set, with the title track and album closer reinforcing the central atmosphere established across the release.
There is a strong sense of 1980s speed metal throughout, with enough melodic material to connect the faster sections to traditional heavy metal. The French lyrics also separate Meurtrier from many contemporary acts working within this style, adding a distinctly Québecois identity to the overall presentation. "Messe De Fer" is a focused debut with a straightforward musical direction, strong guitar work, energetic vocals, and an old-school approach that should appeal to listeners who prefer their speed metal fast, melodic, dark, and free from modern stylistic distractions.
