Six String Revolver comes out of Hurricane, Utah, and play American hard rock with southern dirt under the fingernails. Raven Cain handles lead vocals, Hawkeye Pearce plays guitar and sings, Bill "Ash" Dent is on bass and Robert "Monster" Cantu sits behind the drums. The band has built its name on stage, where the songs were clearly written to live, and they land somewhere between the swagger of Guns N' Roses and the southern bulk of Black Stone Cherry, with Saving Abel's radio instincts showing up in the choruses.
"Be Somebody" was recorded and engineered by Tom Chandler at Elite Studios and produced by Peggy Foster and Robert Cantu. The guitars sit forward with a warm, slightly loose low end that keeps the southern edge intact, and Cain's vocal is tracked close, with the takes left rough where they should be. Cantu's drums are the one place the mix plays it safe, the kick tucked a little too politely under the rhythm guitars when the band pushes tempo. Songwriting works on the same two pillars throughout, a riff with a swing to it and a chorus built for a crowd to shout back, and when both arrive together the results are hard to argue with. The performances are tight without being clinical, Pearce's leads stay melodic and short, and the band never sounds like it is reaching past its range.
Several tracks share the same mid tempo stomp and the same chorus shape, and by the back half the songs start borrowing from each other, blurring the run when it should be building. The sequencing front loads the heaviest material, which leaves the closing stretch flatter than it needs to be. Originality is not the selling point here, the band is working inside a well marked lane and does not try to widen it, but they play it with real conviction and no posturing. A hard rock record made with strong hooks, and a couple of songs that will hit twice as hard live as they do on headphones.
