Aphonic Threnody was founded in London in 2012 by Italian guitarist Riccardo Veronese. From day one it has been an international band, with musicians from across Europe joining and leaving. The "First Funeral" EP came out in 2013, followed by "When Death Comes" in 2014, "Of Loss And Grief" in 2017, "The Great Hatred" in 2020, "The All Consuming Void" in 2021, "The Loneliest Walk" in 2022 and "When Death Comes Again" in 2023, plus a handful of splits. Past members include Roberto Mura of Urna and Daniel Neagoe of Eye Of Solitude. Today the core is Veronese and guitarist Justin Buller.
"Grace My Heart" is an independent release, mixed and mastered by Veronese himself. The album deals with grief, endurance, spiritual fracture and acceptance, and follows suffering as it slowly turns into a quiet kind of grace. The sound is classic funeral doom: huge riffs moving at a glacial pace, deep cavernous growls, mournful lead guitar melodies and keyboards that spread a cinematic backdrop behind the heaviness. The mix is wide and heavy. Guitars and bass build a towering low end, and the keys sit a step back, adding depth to the gloom.
In "Why Did You Go" the riffs move like a funeral procession while a lead guitar line weeps above them. When the melody finally rises over the heaviness, the grief turns into something close to peace. That move from despair toward acceptance runs through the whole album and gives it a real emotional arc. The shadows of My Dying Bride and Pantheist hang heavy over the melodies, and the keyboards often fall back on stock church organ and string tones.
The tempos rarely shift, the lead lines come back in similar shapes from track to track, and the growls hold one low register for most of the album, so the tracks tend to melt into each other. This is a devastating, heartfelt funeral-doom album that turns mourning into something close to grace, and it rewards anyone willing to sink into its slow darkness.
