Flyhouse is the band of American guitarist Jacob Leonard, who writes the music and plays guitar and bass. The name is a question aimed at the listener. Do we have meaning, or are we flies stuck inside a house, circling toward the light on the ceiling until the day we reach it? Leonard lives with Visual Snow Syndrome, a neurological condition that covers the field of vision with permanent static, and his writing comes straight out of that warped view of reality. For the debut he assembled a lineup that turns heads on paper. Andy Cizek of Monuments and Danny Salsbury split the vocals, and Blake Richardson of Between The Buried And Me and Xavier Ware split the drums. "Through The Eyes Behind Dark Glass", is the first entry in the band's discography.
The EP has five tracks and runs a little over twenty minutes. Jamie King recorded, mixed and mastered it, and Daniel Wagner did the artwork and logo. These are the first five tracks Leonard ever wrote, and the EP plays as a guitarist emptying his notebook with a top tier crew behind him. The riffs are low tuned and syncopated, stop start chugs locked to the kick drum, with airy leads opening up the choruses. The vocal pairing is the main hook. Cizek climbs into a high, soaring register, Salsbury takes the screams, and the chorus of "Hellbent" sticks after one spin.
The gap sits between story and sound. An EP born from a condition that bends what the eyes sees promises disorientation, and the music mostly stays on safe djent ground. This is a strong, sturdy debut from a writer with ideas and a lineup most unsigned bands would kill for, and it needs a stranger, more personal sound next time to match the story behind it.
