Noumena is a Finnish band from Ähtäri, active since 1998, playing melodic death metal with Nordic melancholy in the melodies and heavy riffs underneath. Six albums came before this one: "Pride/Fall" (2002), "Absence" (2005), "Anatomy Of Life" (2006), "Death Walks With Me" (2013), "Myrrys" (2017) and "Anima" (2020). The band has played more than 130 shows across Finland, Central Europe, Japan and China, sharing stages with Insomnium, Beast In Black and Moonsorrow. Seven members make up the line up: Antti Haapanen on growls, Suvi Uura on vocals, Markus Hirvonen on guitars and vocals, Ville Lamminaho on guitars, mandolin and vocals, Tuukka Tuomela on guitars, Hannu Savolainen on bass and Ilkka Unnbom on drums.
"Maanääri" is the seventh album through Haunted Zoo Productions, nine tracks sung in Finnish. Hirvonen and Savolainen wrote the lyrics, and the words stay on loneliness, lost connection and grief. "Tyhjyys" (The Void) turns that emptiness into anger as much as sorrow. The arrangements belong to the whole band, and the three vocalists layered in "Tyhjyys" are the proof. Fragile melodies sit against crushing riffs, and that contrast gives the track its sting.
The sound stays inside Scandinavian melodic death metal, and the Finnish language, the mandolin and the three voices give it its own face. The sequencing is the one gamble. "Kuolemankello", "Surunkehrä" and "Tyhjyys" sit back to back at positions two, three and four, so the most obvious hooks are spent early, and the epic tracks "Ihmishämärä" and "Hiidenmailla" at seven and eight have to justify the back half. A strong seventh album from a band nearly three decades in.
