Acausal Intrusion is an American duo, Nythroth on guitars, bass, keyboards and backing vocals, Cave Ritual on drums and vocals, with Nythroth writing the music and Cave Ritual the lyrics. They closed their first trilogy a few years back and settled into the underground as one of its more interesting names, twisting blackened technical death metal into a surreal, cerebral shape. Their latest album before this one, “Panpsychism”, steered that sound toward psychedelic territory.

“Vomit Meditations” arrives through I, Voidhanger Records on LP, CD and digital, six tracks in a bit under fifty minutes, wrapped in another evocative cover by Daniele Valeriani with layout by Francesco Gemelli. Nythroth mixed it at Malevolent Sound Studios in Los Angeles and Will mastered it at Dead Air Studios, so the sound comes from one man's hands and ears, and the guitars, bass and keyboards move as one body. The riffs twist and spiral like matter torn into particles, each one spinning in search of a form it never finds, while Cave Ritual's intricate drumming and cavernous growls hold the storm together.

In “Vomit Meditation”, “Requiem Murmur” and “Psychic Abolishment” the scores stretch out, the brutality dissolves into hallucinatory melodies with a faint melancholy and ambient textures, and the arrangements shift with a free jazz looseness. The six tracks are sequenced as one long descent, with the extended scores opening the album and taking up its final stretch. The search for form is the whole idea, and with four tracks running past the eight minute mark it tests the listener's stamina. A good album, ambitious and strange, with a sound that belongs to this duo alone and it leaves greatness on the table.
