James Legendforge is the independent UK melodic power metal project of James Spreadbury, combining original songwriting and lyrics with AI-assisted music production (a big thumps down). The material on the debut album, “The Witchfinder’s Flame”, draws on ideas and lyrics written as far back as the late 1980s and 1990s, now reworked into ten tracks spanning fantasy, folklore, personal conflict and social concerns. Spreadbury provides the original vocal recordings, melodies, lyrics and creative direction, while AI tools assist with instrumentation, arrangements and studio effects. The project takes influence from symphonic power metal and melodic hard rock, aiming for a cinematic presentation built around dramatic storytelling, soaring vocals and large choruses.
“The Witchfinder’s Flame” combines epic melodies, theatrical arrangements and hard rock elements across an album lasting around 53 minutes. “Sorcerer’s Summit” introduces the fantasy setting through grand orchestration, while “Architect Of Fate” turns towards personal choice and destiny. “Alter Ego, The Beast Within” explores the conflict between opposing sides of human nature, supported by dramatic vocal lines and energetic guitar work. The album also addresses environmental destruction in “Midnight For Mother Gaia” and space exploration in “The Cosmic Frontier”, adding social commentary to its fantasy themes.
“The Space You Left” shifts towards emotional hard rock, while the title track closes the album with a tale of persecution and religious hysteria. The production aims for a large, cinematic sound, with AI-generated instrumentation and arrangements giving the songs a consistent symphonic sheen. However, the extensive use of AI-assisted composition and production raises questions about the depth of the musical performances, particularly when the arrangements rely on familiar power metal formulas and predictable climactic choruses.
The lyrics have a personal history behind them, but the musical presentation does not always give their varied subjects equal impact. “The Witchfinder’s Flame” offers an ambitious collection of melodic metal songs with several engaging themes, although the songwriting and production need greater individuality to distinguish the project from the wider symphonic power metal field. Although the result is good, the AI-generated music prevents from rating it.
