Formed in Cardiff in 1967, Budgie became one of the important names in the development of British heavy metal and hard rock during the early 1970s. Led by Burke Shelley on vocals and bass, alongside guitarist Tony Bourge, the band established a musical style that combined heavy riffs, unconventional songwriting and a distinctive approach to hard rock. Their influence reached far beyond their commercial success, with Metallica, Iron Maiden and Soundgarden covering their material over the years. "Running From My Soul: The MCA Years 1973-1975" collects three albums from a crucial period in their career, featuring three different drummers, Ray Philips, Pete Boot and Steve Williams.
This 3CD edition brings together "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend", "In For The Kill!" and "Bandolier", offering a substantial look at Budgie's development across three consecutive years. The self-produced "Never Turn Your Back On A Friend" contains essential material such as "Breadfan", "Parents" and "In The Grip Of A Tyrefitter's Hand", alongside their interpretation of "Baby Please Don't Go". "In For The Kill!" adds the extended attack of "Zoom Club" and the title track, while "Bandolier" introduces another chapter through "Breaking All The House Rules", "Slipaway" and "I Can't See My Feelings".
The collection also includes single edits and the non-album B-sides "Wondering What Everyone Knows" and "Honey". Unfortunately, "Crash Course In Brain Surgery" is absent due to licensing issues. The production retains the character of its original recordings, documenting a band whose approach to heavy rock helped shape an important part of the genre's early history. An essential collection of three influential albums, with enough historical and musical substance to justify its place in any serious Budgie collection.
