Deathgeist crawled out of the Brazilian underground in January 2017 when former Bywar members Adriano Perfetto and Victor Regep decided to forge a new thrash metal machine. They recruited Mauricio Bertoni on bass and dropped their self-titled debut later that year. "666" followed in 2019, bringing darker elements to the table before Fernando Oster took over the drum throne. The pandemic stalled their touring, leading to the creation of "Procession of Souls" in 2022. Now, they return with their fourth full-length, "Underworld", unleashed through Punishment 18 Records.

"Underworld" instantly unleashes total sonic violence. The dual guitar attack of Perfetto and Regep delivers a relentless barrage of fast, punishing riffs. Oster beats his drum kit into total submission, locking in perfectly with the rumbling bass lines provided by Bertoni. Perfetto screams and shouts with a raw, vicious delivery, tearing through the chaotic instrumentation. The entire album operates as a massive thrashing beast, geared entirely towards speed and destruction.

The lyrics investigate the grim realities of existence and dark mythology. They explore the ancient Egyptian judgment of the dead, alongside brutal tales of mind control and human manipulation. The subjects build a bleak and hostile universe, perfectly matching the musical devastation. Songs like "Destination: Dust" and "SkinWalkers" rip through the speakers, offering high-speed hostility and vicious riffing.

“Underworld” isn’t about perfection, it’s about rage, sweat, and the madness that drives people to scream louder than the silence around them. Deathgeist keeps their roots buried deep in the rotten soil of true thrash, while pushing forward with venom and vision. There’s power here, dirty, relentless, and alive.

Score: 7.5
