Achilles Steel formed in Iowa back in 1985 and quickly grew into a force in the Midwest metal underground. Through the early years, the band tore up local club stages and festivals, blasting crowds with high-energy performances. After spending decades apart, Achilles Steel reunited in 2024 with their sights set on writing new music. They entered the studio as veterans to create an eight-track album called "Welcome To The War".
This album unleashes sweaty, denim-clad 1980s heavy metal. You get aggressive riffs ripping through the speakers alongside pounding drums. They pack these tracks with loud, anthemic choruses and screaming solos. "Achilles Steel" and "Battlefield" blast forward with pure headbanging muscle. It is an old-school assault meant to be played at maximum volume. The entire run of "Welcome To The War" throws down killer, street-level music.
You can hear a strong influence from acts like Metallica, Metal Church, and Dokken in the guitar tone. They also throw down the epic true metal style of Medieval Steel, Warlord, and Omen. Tracks such as "(Rise) The Unknown Soldier" and "Sins Of The Father" combine those old-school melodic ideas into a full-on metal attack. The solos burn fast, adding serious fire to the mid-tempo stompers. Virgin Steele and Savatage fans will catch onto the vocal delivery and traditional arrangements right away.
Achilles Steel brings true metal back from the grave with plenty of fire. "Welcome To The War" provides a steady stream of lethal riffs and heavy rhythms. A few tracks blend together near the end. The production stays strictly rough around the edges. The aggressive attitude pushes past those minor flaws. "Children Born Of War" and "Feel The Steel" close things out with high speed and volume. It is a completely satisfying run for anyone craving pure, vintage steel.
