Formed in Kent back in 2022, Iron Slug blasted onto the UK doom circuit and immediately got to work. They dropped two EPs in 2024, "Debauched And Bored" and "Unrepentant Grin", establishing a reputation for low, slow, pounding heaviness. Now, they return with their debut full-length, "Deceit And Misery". This duo, consisting of Will Rayner on guitar and vocals alongside Will Bond smashing the drums, delivers five massive songs. The run time stretches out over serious distances, dropping down deep into total doom and sludge devastation.

The guitar work on "Deceit And Misery" drags huge Black Sabbath inspired grooves through the dirt, grinding away with methodical, crushing force and pulling you under a steady avalanche of distortion. When the vocals kick in, they offer a melodic, measured delivery. The singing adds a layer of absolute darkness, towering over the punishing drum beats. Songs like "A Calming Turmoil" and "Graceless Bodies" present towering riffs alongside these powerful vocal lines.

Iron Slug strips everything down to the core. The sound bleeds bleak, bitter emotion, riding on a hypnotic pulse that drags you straight down to the void. The massive closer "Ritualistic Feeding" and the devastating "Die The Same" drop heavily onto the listener. Every single drum strike and down-tuned chord crashes with maximum force. The production by Jason Frye keeps the audio entirely raw and totally textured. You get an unfiltered blast of loud metal straight to the skull.

The striking cover art by Black Crow White matches the audio within. Released through Road To Masochist, "Deceit And Misery" drops heavy and loud. Iron Slug put together a totally crushing debut full-length. It delivers the essential low-end destruction metal fans constantly crave. A massively heavy, thoroughly punishing listening experience every single minute.

Score: 7.5
