Nachtgnawer formed in the frozen lands of Finland back in 2022. The musicians involved share bloodlines with underground hordes like Licht Des Urteils, Sacrificium Carmen, Riivaus, Coraxul, and Nôidva. Before arriving at this debut mini-album, they unleashed a demo, a split alongside Wulfseer, and a live tape. Now they drop "Medieval Devourer" through Purity Through Fire. The collective lineage establishes expectations for traditional northern freezing cold metal, and they deliver those icy storms straight from the crypt.
This release summons a freezing, primitive style of black metal rooted in the late nineties. The guitars carve freezing melodies across the blasting drums. You hear a cold melancholy mixed with triumphant war-marches woven into the main riffs. The string section weaves dark magic, nodding to the classic French underground circles. Minor keys clash with relentless drumming, bringing forth an old-school vampiric frost. The production keeps things grim, freezing the snare and vocals in a dark cave of reverb.
Behind the traditional northern blast beats, Nachtgnawer injects traditional heavy metal pacing into their assault. Slower, pounding drum sections march alongside epic riffing. Subtle keyboard lines drift through the background, adding an eerie, ancient atmosphere to the blasting sections. The bass guitar rumbles underneath the icy distortion, locking in with the steady double-kick drumming. The vocals rip through the cold air with high-pitched screams and throat-tearing shrieks.
The execution stays totally primal and unyielding. The tempo shifts drop into mid-paced trudges, dragging the listener through the filth. The guitars freeze the blood with sorrowful lead melodies. A few transitions clunk around, jarring the forward momentum slightly, keeping things rough around the edges. The songwriting sticks strictly to the ancient underground rulebook. It delivers cold, straightforward aggression for maniacs craving pure northern darkness. The blasting sections succeed for true underground fanatics.
"Medieval Devourer" summons proper freezing darkness. The riffs freeze over the blast beats, and the atmosphere stays grim. Nachtgnawer delivers traditional black metal tailored for the underground tape traders. The grim melodies and harsh screams supply enough poison for anyone obsessed with the Finnish underground. Throw this CD into your player when the winter storms arrive.
