Memoira is a symphonic metal crew hailing from Finland, operating since 2007. Over a long fifteen-year run, they released three albums and several singles. Recently, they revamped their roster, bringing in vocalist Krista Astrid Schröter in 2023. Since then, they dropped a few singles leading up to their new EP, "Dollmaker". This updated lineup delivers epic, cinematic music heavily relying on grand orchestrations alongside heavy riffing.
The sound on "Dollmaker" is huge. You get a massive wall of orchestration crashing straight into modern metal riffing. The keys and synths provide a grand, cinematic atmosphere that wraps around the heavy guitars and driving basslines. Krista's vocal delivery brings serious power and emotion to the mix. It is an intense assault of melodies that strikes you right in the chest, proving the updated lineup has serious chemistry.
The EP groups recent singles like "Cryonic Heart" and "Emerald Eyes" together with the title track, "Dollmaker". Bringing these tracks into a single package creates a continuous, heavy journey. The guitars from Serdar Ilter dig deep into heavy grooves, and Lassi Nuolivaara creates a sweeping symphonic layer on keyboards. The rhythm section, manned by Niko Laaksonen and Kimmo Puhakka, anchors everything with crushing force.
Taking on a legendary track is always a gamble. Memoira tackles "The Show Must Go On" by Queen and they completely crush it. They inject their signature symphonic metal elements into the famous anthem. There is no basic copy here; they turn the legendary song into a towering metal anthem that fits perfectly alongside their original material. The arrangement honors the original source material. At the same time, it turns up the heavy factor significantly.
"Dollmaker" gives fans the goods they crave from modern symphonic metal. The production hits high peaks, the vocals soar, and the riffs provide a necessary aggressive edge. Memoira delivers four tracks of pure, intense melodic metal. It is a loud, triumphant return that definitely rips.
