Origin Finland
These Finnish maniacs started out as a tribute act, worshiping at the altar of groove-heavy American death metal. They spent their early days obsessing over the mid-tempo stomp of Six Feet Under, eventually becoming so proficient at that specific brand of violence that they caught the eye of the master of the low-end grunt himself. This isn't just some local band playing dress-up; they evolved into a legitimate force that earned the respect of the very icons they used to mimic.
When you get the actual voice of Six Feet Under and former Cannibal Corpse legend Chris Barnes to front your record, you better bring the heat. On "Swarm!", Torture Killer did exactly that. This is a masterclass in how to write riffs that make you want to put your head through a drywall. It’s got that specific, swampy swing that makes old-school death metal so infectious. The guitars on tracks like "Obsessed With Homicide" and “Cannibal Gluttony" are tuned down into the dirt, churning out rhythms that stay stuck in your brain like a rusted hook.
Barnes sounds absolutely vile here, more engaged than he had been in years during that era. His gutturals are deep, wet, and filled with the kind of malice that made him a legend in the first place. He doesn’t just perform; he haunts the music. The chemistry between his Florida-bred vocal style and the cold, calculated Finnish riffage creates a monster that feels more dangerous than a standard tribute. "A Funeral For The Masses" and "I Killed You" show a band that understands pace, dragging the listener through the mud before speeding up just enough to keep the adrenaline spiking.
This 20th anniversary edition from Brutal Planet Records finally gives the album the treatment it deserves. The rotting-amber vinyl looks like something pulled out of a crime scene, and the remastering brings out the subterranean thud of the drums without losing the grit. It’s a stripped-back, no-nonsense assault. No weird experiments, no symphonic garbage, just straight-up death metal meant for people who think the genre peaked when groove became king.
"Swarm!" is a record for the purists. If you worship at the feet of Obituary or Malevolent Creation, this is essential listening. It’s got a swagger to it, a certain arrogance in how simple and effective the songwriting is. "Heading Towards The Butchery" and "A Violent Scene Of Death" close things out with enough force to leave you looking for a neck brace. It’s a rare moment where a fan-driven project becomes a definitive entry in the genre's history.
Twenty years later, this thing still reeks of death in the best way possible. It’s a document of what happens when the underground rises up to meet its idols. If you missed this back in '06, or your old copy is thrashed, this reissue is the perfect excuse to get re-acquainted with one of the heaviest collaborations to ever come out of the Finnish scene.
