Sacriversum started back in 1992 and were already walking a different path while many death metal bands still focused only on brutality and speed. Their early material mixed old school death metal with progressive ideas, dark atmosphere and the unforgettable keyboard work of Krzysztof “Baran” Baranowicz, giving the band a character that stood apart from the crowded underground scene of the 90s. Albums like “The Shadow Of The Golden Fire”, “Soteria” and “Beckettia” built a loyal cult following before the band disappeared in 2005. Now, after returning in 2022, Sacriversum reconnect with the spirit of their early years and continue that strange and adventurous journey with “Before The Birth Of Light”.

“Before The Birth Of Light” sounds like a band rediscovering unfinished business after many years away. The album blends classic death metal aggression with progressive structures and haunting keyboard textures that give the songs a very distinctive atmosphere. The Hammond organ lines add an almost mystical aura at times, bringing memories of old progressive rock into the middle of the band’s heavy and dark sound. Fans of Death, Pestilence and Nocturnus will immediately understand where Sacriversum are coming from, though the band never turns into a clone of those names.

The songwriting is one of the album’s strongest points. Sacriversum avoid the usual verse-chorus formulas and build songs that develop naturally through changing riffs, melodic passages and darker atmospheric moments. Even with all the progressive touches, the music still has the spirit of old school death metal running through its veins.

The guitar work of Krystian “MacKozer” Kozerawski and Olaf Kozerawski gives the album plenty of energy and movement, while Jan “Trocin” TraciƄski adds a younger fire behind the drums that pushes the material forward with intensity. The Viking inspired themes also fit the music very well, adding a cold and epic dimension without turning the album into fantasy metal.

Sacriversum balances heaviness with emotion and atmosphere. The keyboards never become decorative additions; they are deeply connected to the identity of the album. Some moments bring an almost dreamlike sensation before the band dives back into aggressive riffing and harsh vocals. The production also helps the album greatly, giving enough space for every instrument without weakening the raw and organic spirit of the music. Older fans of progressive death metal will appreciate how naturally the band combines technical ideas with memorable songwriting instead of turning everything into a mechanical performance.

There are a few moments where the album could have benefited from a little more sharpness in pacing, especially during some of the longer arrangements, and not every section leaves the same impact. Still, the overall quality remains high and the atmosphere surrounding the album pulls the listener deeper with every spin. Sacriversum sounds inspired and focused, not like musicians returning only for nostalgia. There is genuine passion in these songs and that gives “Before The Birth OfLight” real staying power.

Fans of progressive death metal should absolutely give this album attention. It offers atmosphere, strong musicianship, memorable songwriting and enough personality to avoid sounding like another retro revival act. Those searching only for straightforward brutality may find the progressive and melodic elements too dominant at times, though listeners open to darker and more adventurous death metal will discover an album with depth and character. Sacriversum returned with something meaningful instead of safe, predictable material, and that alone deserves respect.
