After spending years buried deep in the underground, Gouge returns with “Pure Deathfuck”, their first new material in a long time after the cult reputation of “Beyond Death” started spreading through tape-trading circles and old-school death metal addicts. The Norwegian duo never chased trends or modern extremity. Their music has always lived in the rotten corners of primitive death metal and early grind, taking influence from the savage spirit of bands like Repulsion, Autopsy, Death Strike, and the earliest days of Death. What made Gouge interesting back then still exists here, they understand the filthy heart of that era instead of copying riffs and aesthetics like countless revival acts.
“Pure Deathfuck” wastes no time and tears through its short runtime with pure savagery. The riffs come out rabid and rotten, the drums attack without mercy, and the vocals sound completely diseased. The whole EP has a foul atmosphere hanging over it, like an old rehearsal tape found inside a mold-covered coffin. Gouge pushes everything into the red and never let the violence cool down. The music sounds desperate, vicious, and obsessed with death in the best possible way.
The strongest aspect of this EP is how natural the aggression comes across. Gouge does not sound calculated or trendy. There is a wild spirit inside these songs that recalls the days when death metal still had punk filth stuck to its boots. The execution is rough and restless, giving the material an old tape-trading aura that fits the songwriting perfectly. Even with the short runtime, the band manages to make the EP memorable because the riffs actually stick and the songs avoid becoming a shapeless blur of noise.
The CD version including the older “Doomed To Death” material also helps complete the picture of what Gouge is about. It connects the past and present naturally, showing that the duo never abandoned their obsession with foul deathgrind and primitive horror. Fans of ancient underground death metal will understand this immediately. This is music made for people who still worship old demo tapes, obscure rehearsal recordings, and the early days when death metal sounded dangerous and completely out of control.
Anyone deeply into rotten old-school death metal and deathgrind should have a good time with “Pure Deathfuck”, especially listeners raised on the filthiest side of the late ‘80s underground. Those searching for refinement or variety may walk away frustrated after a few spins. Gouge stays loyal to their disgusting vision and never water it down for easier consumption. For the right audience, this short attack delivers enough decay, violence, and morbid energy to satisfy.
