Forged in the Nordic underground, Doedsvangr have carved a singular path through the black metal landscape since their inception in 2014. Conceived by frontman Doedsadmiral as an outlet for uncompromising brutality and creative vision, the band quickly assembled a formidable lineup, drawing members from the ranks of Nordjevel and other storied acts. The name Doedsvangr, meaning both "fields of death" and "dead womb", serves as a fitting harbinger of the band’s sonic and thematic intent; to explore the bleakest corners of existence with unflinching honesty and raw power. Doedsvangr’s journey began with the critically acclaimed debut "Satan Ov Suns" (2017), a record that seamlessly fused the atmospheres of Finnish and Norwegian black metal. In 2019, a new line-up was established, ushering in a new era of creative exploration. The following year saw the release of "Serpents Ov Old", an album that deepened the band’s reputation for delivering eccentric, visceral black metal. The band’s live presence grew with a powerful release show in Oslo, joined by Blood Red Throne, Svarttjern and appearances at various festivals. In October 2022, the EP "Koinonia" was unleashed, further cementing their legacy. Now, in 2026, Doedsvangr enter a new chapter with their third full-length album "Within The Flesh", set for release this spring via Soulseller Records.
True black metal is about cold devastation and zero compromise, and that is what breathes through this full-length assault. The atmosphere reeks of majesty, grimness, and morbidity. This creation merges the frozen spirit of Norwegian darkness with the sinister essence of the Finnish underground, striking with fury. The sonic landscape is built on freezing riffs and savage drum assaults, providing the perfect foundation for vocals that sound deeply rooted in the underworld. The production strikes the right balance, keeping things harsh, cold, and ancient without losing the force of the instruments.
The guitar work from BST and Shatraug is one of the album’s strongest weapons. The riffs move between hostile blasting sections, obscure melodic patterns and ominous slower moments that deepen the sinister atmosphere surrounding the entire release. Antichristian’s drumming attacks with precision and intensity, while Sanrabb’s bass adds extra darkness underneath the guitars. Doedsadmiral sounds completely possessed behind the microphone, spitting out every line with madness and contempt, fitting perfectly with the album’s oppressive character.
The songwriting relies on relentless progression. Tracks like "Devil Bites Man" and "Blodskam" plunge straight into freezing tempests, where the guitar work locks into hypnotic, dark melodies. The pace shifts effortlessly between blinding speed and slower, oppressive movements, creating a suffocating pressure. Songs like "Omnipath" and "The Pentagram Upon My Mouth" display an eccentric, unusual approach to traditional black metal arrangement, pushing a bizarre vibe that maintains its sinister direction. By the time the massive final track "Rites Of Thorns, Rise Of Flesh" finishes its execution, the sonic destruction is complete. This is a cold, relentless journey into the void.
