Turku’s Sum Of Seven started life under the name Sonus Corona, first as a project between friends with a shared passion for progressive metal and melodic songwriting. Over time, the band grew into a serious act with a stronger presence in the Finnish prog scene, helped by energetic live shows and ambitious compositions. After solid reactions to their early releases and a difficult period involving lineup changes, the pandemic, and guitarist Ari Lempinen’s serious accident, the band returned stronger with vocalist Marko Loukamaa in the fold and finally completed “Echoes Of The Hypermind”, a concept album centered around AI, consciousness, and the limits of human understanding.
“Echoes Of The Hypermind” is the kind of progressive metal album that balances technical musicianship with melody in a natural way. The influence of bands like Haken, Threshold and Vola is easy to notice. The riffs are energetic, the keyboards add a strong atmospheric layer, and the melodies stay in your head long after the album ends. The concept surrounding an evolving AI gives the material an expansive sci-fi flavor without turning the album into something cold or mechanical.
The strongest point here is the balance between progressive arrangements and accessibility. Sum Of Seven never disappear into endless technical exercises. Even when the songs become more adventurous, the hooks and vocal lines remain important. Marko Loukamaa does an excellent job throughout the album, bringing emotion and strength without going overboard. The guitar work from Ari Lempinen and Harri Annala gives many songs an uplifting and dramatic character, while the rhythm section adds plenty of energy underneath the more layered sections. “Wonder” closes the album in impressive fashion, combining soaring melodies with a cinematic atmosphere that fits the album’s narrative perfectly.
The album also benefits from strong production by Tommi Kujala. Everything sounds balanced and clear without losing the power expected from modern progressive metal. The emotional side of the material becomes stronger because of that clarity, especially during the more melodic moments where the keyboards and vocals take the lead. Even with the conceptual approach and longer compositions, the album remains engaging and never drifts into self-indulgent territory.
“Echoes Of The Hypermind” shows a band that has gone through setbacks and returned with renewed determination. Sum Of Seven combines progressive songwriting, melodic metal, and thoughtful themes into an album that offers plenty for fans of modern prog metal. It may not reach the very top level of the genre’s giants, though it easily proves that the band belongs in the conversation with many respected names in today’s European progressive metal scene.
