Italian metallers Heavenfall crawled out of the underground back in 2003, forging a path that fuses traditional heavy metal with sharper, aggressive elements. Their 2012 debut full-length “Falling From Heaven” gathered strong support from the underground scene, a momentum they sustained with the 2017 EP “The Besiders”. After years of hitting club circuits and open-air festival stages alongside heavy hitters like Q5, Domine, and Elvenking, the band returns with their latest full-length creation.

“Thorn” moves through many shades of heavy metal, from fast melodic attacks to darker and more reflective moments. The album has a serious and often sorrowful atmosphere, centered on personal struggles, isolation, disappointment and inner conflict. Songs like “Squall-led”, “Sudden Zenith” and “Lingering Under The Acid Rain” push the pace with sharp riffing and dramatic melodies, while tracks such as “Left Apart” and “Midnightingale” explore a calmer and more emotional direction. Heavenfall put a lot of focus on melody and arrangement, giving the album a rich musical character without turning soft.

Twin guitar melodies, expressive leads and darker harmonies constantly shape the album’s identity. There is also a progressive touch running through several songs, especially in the changing structures and shifting dynamics of tracks like “No Candlelight” and “Ora Pro Nemine”. The rhythm section supports everything well, switching between aggressive sections and slower passages naturally, while the vocals fit the emotional direction of the album with passion and dramatic intensity.

Not every section leaves the same impact and a few moments stretch longer than needed, especially in the second half where the introspective direction becomes very dominant. Still, Heavenfall avoids becoming dull because the songwriting remains varied and emotionally honest. “Stramonium” closes the album in strong fashion, mixing thrashy energy, melancholy and progressive ideas into one of the most complete compositions on the release.

“Thorn” is an album of dark emotions and thoughtful songwriting without losing its metallic power. Heavenfall focus on expressive ararngements filled with tension, sorrow and determination. Some parts could have been trimmed down for a stronger impact, though the album still offers many rewarding moments for listeners into melancholic heavy metal with progressive touches. This is a strong, cohesive metal release that delivers deep atmospheres without sacrificing the core heavy metal foundation.
