German outfit Abrogation has been building their name in the melodic death metal underground for several years, mixing aggressive riff work with darker atmospheric elements and a strong emotional direction. Coming from Germany’s heavy scene, the band gradually moved beyond straightforward melodic death metal formulas, shaping a sound that leans into cinematic arrangements and dramatic songwriting without losing its aggressive core. With “Widerschein”, Abrogation push further into that territory and show a more mature and focused identity than before.

“Widerschein” comes across as an album built with patience and attention to detail. The songwriting has a broader scope than what many modern melodic death metal releases offer, moving between sharp aggression, emotional tension and layered atmosphere in a natural way. Abrogation avoids empty bombast and instead aims for songs that have emotion alongside heaviness. The production also gives the material a serious boost. The mix from Ricardo Borges and Jens Bogren, along with Tony Lindgren’s mastering, gives the album a modern sound that stays powerful.

The guitar work balances melody and aggression well, allowing the songs to move between darker passages and more explosive moments smoothly. The vocal performance adds a lot to the album’s character too, shifting through different expressions that fit the dramatic themes running through the material. Lyrically and musically, “Widerschein” revolves around conflict, uncertainty and inner struggles, giving the album a darker emotional tone that sticks throughout its running time. The atmosphere becomes one of its biggest advantages because it gives many sections extra depth without drowning the heavier side of the music.

The songs are written with a clear identity and the album flows naturally without sounding assembled from disconnected ideas. Some sections could have used a little more raw energy and a few arrangements stretch longer than needed, though the overall quality remains high and the band rarely loses momentum. Abrogation sound fully committed to this style and the result is an album that balances melody, heaviness and atmosphere in a convincing way.

With “Widerschein”, Abrogation shows clear progression in songwriting and presentation while keeping the spirit of melodic death metal alive at the center of the album. It is dramatic, emotional and aggressive without becoming overly theatrical, and the production gives every section enough force to leave an impact. Metalheads who appreciate a focused, professional melodic death metal album will find plenty of reasons to spin this one.
