First conceived in 2016 and taking full shape in Kalamata, Greece in 2021, Salos evolved from a singular project into a fully realized instrumental duo. What began as a raw idea matured into a deliberate convergence of progressive metal architecture and atmospheric post-rock, operating in the spaces between transcendent drift and crushing gravity. Emerging from the Aegean scene, they deliver an uncompromising sonic experience relying purely on the force of two instruments.
This debut full-length album delivers a devastatingly heavy, cinematic experience that pins you down. Salos rely entirely on the power of the riffs and a massive rhythmic foundation, channeling the expansive
tension of God Is An Astronaut along with the monolithic precision of Russian Circles. The production masterfully captures a colossal sonic horizon, where the earth-shaking heaviness of the guitars and drums is complemented by the synth contributions of Nikos Mavromatis. The inclusion of saxophone parts from jazz musician Yiannis Kassetas on "Arches" injects an unexpected layer of human fragility into the monolithic scope.
The songwriting builds immense momentum. On "Hvítserkur", towering riffs rise with immense power, creating an immediate, crushing impact. The band handles structural devolution perfectly, leading into the long reckoning of "We Deteriorate, Let’s Disintegrate", which executes a gradual, slow-motion collapse. A reimagined version of "Slaughter" featuring the legendary Björn Strid from Soilwork on vocals adds a whole new dimension, bringing a furious vocal performance that elevates the track to a higher level of intensity. The closing movements shift into ambient inversions that perfectly wrap up the release. This is a remarkably awesome and strong debut of atmospheric heaviness. To my best albums of the year for sure. From out of nowhere comes the unexpected.
